I Bought a Pottery Wheel!
Growing up I was always creating, I was always creating with my hands. I had all the craft books, the tv show Art Attack was my favourite and so every weekend I would be making something new. My Aunty and Grandma taught me how to sew, I spent weekends with my Grandad who’s an artist teaching me how to sculpt, I was making jewellery, painting and everything in between.
But then sometime during High School, I started to compare my creative talents with everyone around me and everyone on social media. I suppressed my creative energy up until earlier this year because I thought that whatever I created wasn’t ever good enough. This did me more harm than good because I ended up with not having a way to express myself. I wasn’t true to myself for over 5 years. I didn’t have any hobbies, I lost myself to fear. I think that it’s very important to have hobbies —you’re doing something for yourself, something that makes you happy. It’s just basic self-care. Take some you time, some alone time.
In London I had the urge to take a ceramics workshop, I took a 12 week course with Turning Earth. It changed my life. Ceramics became my meditation practice, it grounded me, centred me, helped with my focus and strengthened my emotional stability. It sparked the passion that I was always looking for. I knew that this is what I wanted to do.
When I made the decision to move from London back to Perth, buying a pottery wheel was the only thing I had clarity around. In the course I learnt the basics and now I’m just teaching myself. I’m so excited to see where my journey with ceramics takes me!
If you’re are looking for a new hobby or struggling to find passion, take a look into your childhood and what brought you the most joy and use it as a prompt for things you could try. Also if you ever get the feeling that you want to try/do something, just do it! You never know what you could be passionate about if you don’t give it a go.
